Dedicated community members are tracking Marathon’s concurrent users on Steam to evaluate the game’s health. This has reignited the debate about the reliability of Steam statistics—the only publicly and regularly updated figures available. Paul Tassi of Forbes addressed this issue, asserting that while Steam numbers accurately reflect a game’s success in examples like Palworld and Black Myth: Wukong, their validity is often challenged when a game underperforms. According to Tassi, even with some games having stronger console numbers, Steam statistics generally indicate a game’s level of interest. Marathon’s Steep Decline in Concurrent Players on Steam Sparks Debate

Marathon’s launch day saw a peak of 88,000 concurrent players. However, the game has not surpassed 80,000 concurrent users since March 6th. Within the last 24 hours, the game has had around 63,000 concurrent players, representing a drop of approximately 25,000 players in four days. A player from The Finals, another first-person shooter, even offered advice regarding Marathon’s Steam statistics. For comparison, Arc Raiders achieved a peak of 158,319 simultaneous players on Steam, while The Finals recently peaked at 12,663. Frustration with Steam number discussions is growing in Marathon’s subreddit, and moderators are removing related posts. Humorous posts mocking the situation have also appeared. Currently, Marathon has 45,600 players on Steam and ranks 8th in revenue generation. Given that PC is Marathon’s main platform, its performance on Steam will likely remain a key indicator of its overall success.
