Set during the Edo period, Onimusha: Way of the Sword departs from previous narratives to present a new legend centered around the iconic samurai Miyamoto Musashi. After Musashi’s defeat in battle, he is revived and receives the Oni gauntlet, a mystical artifact that empowers him to confront hordes of Genma occupying a distorted version of Japan’s ancient capital. The game features meticulously recreated historical locales, such as the Kiyomizudera temple shrouded in supernatural mist. Gameplay promises a return to the intense action of earlier Onimusha titles, but with a modernized approach. Eschewing a Soulslike style, the focus remains on mastering swordsmanship, emphasizing precisely timed counters (Issen) and soul absorption. To ensure realistic weight and technique in each strike, Capcom employed real-life swordsmen for motion capture sessions, allowing Musashi to battle not only demons but also historical rivals like Sasaki Ganryu.
