During the week of February 16-22, 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 sales in Japan surpassed those of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. The Switch 2 sold over 63,000 units, while the PS5 Digital Edition sold approximately 10,000. In its first eight months, the Switch 2 has sold 4.5 million units, quickly approaching the original PlayStation 5’s 5.9 million units sold over five years and three months. Total sales for all PS5 models and the Pro version in Japan amount to 7.4 million units. This reflects a consistent trend of Nintendo’s dominance in the Japanese market, where the original Switch sold nearly three times as many units as the PS5. Mario Tennis Fever was the top-selling game in Japan for that week on the Nintendo Switch 2, driving sales of another 14,577 copies at retail. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined followed as the second best-selling title. Other strong software sales included Mario Kart World, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (on both Switch and Switch 2), Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Ties, Minecraft, and Nintendo Switch Sports.

Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates Sales in Japan, Outpacing Combined PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series X/S Units

The following week, February 23-29, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 again moved 63,313 units. The Switch OLED model sold 19,858 units, and the Switch Lite sold 8,079 units during the same period. Regarding PlayStation sales for that week, the PS5 Digital Edition sold 5,641 units, and the standard PS5 sold 2,776 units. PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X sales were lower, with 1,926 and 760 units sold, respectively. Digital versions of the Xbox Series X and S saw even fewer sales, with 294 and 134 units sold. The PS4 sold only 37 units in Japan that week. The new Nintendo Switch 2 has already outsold the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 Digital Edition combined in Japan within two weeks of its release. Experts predict Switch 2 sales could exceed 2.2 million units in Japan, assuming supply meets demand.
