Amazon Reveals First Image from God of War TV Series

Amazon has released the first image of Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus in the upcoming God of War series for Prime Video, heralding the start of production on the initial season. Along with the image, Amazon teased, “Father and Son… Their journey to the top of the mountain begins now.” The series, which has already been greenlit for two seasons, will delve into Norse mythology, adapting events from the two most recent main installments in the game franchise. The official synopsis reveals: “Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. As they travel, Kratos strives to guide Atreus toward becoming a better god, while Atreus endeavors to teach Kratos how to be more human.” Ryan Hurst, now portraying Kratos in the Amazon series, previously voiced Thor in Sony Santa Monica’s 2022 video game, God of War Ragnarok. The cast also features Max Parker as Heimdall, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarves Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the God of War series. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes. Callum Vinson’s portrayal of Atreus depicts a capable archer with a love for animals, eager to explore beyond his secluded forest dwelling. Following his mother’s death, Atreus craves his father’s approval and seeks to prove himself in a perilous world. His youthfulness is a departure from the character’s game counterpart. A premiere date for Amazon’s God of War series has not yet been announced. Separately, Sony Santa Monica is commemorating the 20th anniversary of God of War with the launch of Sons of Sparta, a 2D spinoff now available on PS5. The studio is also developing remakes of the original trilogy. Release dates for the remakes are still pending.
