The Riyadh Air Metropolitan Stadium, home of Atlético de Madrid, is undergoing a technology upgrade featuring a new smart, self-driving network based on HPE solutions. The two-season project will modernize the stadium’s communication systems. The existing eight-year-old system will be replaced with over 1,500 WiFi 7 access points managed by HPE Aruba Central. This platform uses Airmatch technology, powered by AI and machine learning, to identify issues and dynamically adjust RF parameters, optimizing network performance. The AI-driven network enhancements will improve the fan experience, enhance security, optimize resource management, and reduce energy consumption. Specifically, AI will track people’s locations and activities within the stadium, generating real-time heat maps of fan movement. This data will enhance security and improve crowd flow management, enabling staff to optimize resource allocation based on fan behavior. The access points can also automatically reduce or shut down when the venue is largely empty, decreasing electricity usage between events with a dynamic energy-saving mode.

Atlético de Madrid is also deploying a separate IP network dedicated to audiovisual operations, independent from the general IT network. This network incorporates strict protocols to ensure high-quality video transmission with minimal latency. Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales and HPE are currently collaborating to test this system. In addition to the stadium upgrades, HPE networks will also power new municipal sports facilities in Sport City (DS01 and DS02) starting in early 2026. The High Performance Center (DS03) will also feature a comprehensive HPE network supporting training fields, medical areas, press zones, and audiovisual spaces between 2025 and 2027. These projects are being implemented in two phases: the first, focused on the stadium, is scheduled for completion during the 2026-27 season, followed by the expansion to Sport City and the High Performance Center. Alfredo Yepez, General Manager of HPE Spain, emphasized the impact of AI: “AI boosts fan experience, cuts energy use, and turns data into smart decisions.” Óscar Mayo of Atlético de Madrid added, “We’re teaming up with HPE to level up our stadium’s connectivity. Since it opened in [20]17, broadband has been a standout feature. Now, AI will let us offer more services and run an intelligent network.”
