Dragon Quest 7 Remake in 2026, Saito’s Upcoming Project Announcements, and Dragon Quest X Expansion Revealed

Square Enix is planning a remake of Dragon Quest 7 for release in early 2026, following the HD-2D remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games. Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito hinted at a special announcement for the ninth anniversary of NieR:Automata. Director Kazutoyo Maehiro also teased a new direction for his next Final Fantasy project, and Square Enix is currently surveying fans to gather feedback on the Final Fantasy series. A demo of the Final Fantasy VII Intergrade Remake is now available on the Nintendo eShop for Switch users. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Yosuke Saito noted that 2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, a franchise to which he has contributed significantly. He added that he is currently developing several projects and anticipates sharing more information soon, teasing announcements that will elicit a “Woooah” response from fans. The new expansion for Dragon Quest X Online, Stray Children of Space and Time, will launch in Japan on June 25, 2026, and preorders are now being accepted. Square Enix will reveal more details at the Dragon Quest X Spring Festival 2026, scheduled for March 20–21.

Dragon Quest X Online Expansion Pack Announced for Japan, Western Release Pending

An All-In-One Package (Version 1-8) will also be released, bundling the base game with all previous updates and expansions, including the Stray Children of Space and Time expansion, for 5,940 yen. The new expansion can also be purchased separately for 4,950 yen. Dragon Quest X Online is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in Japan. The Sleeping Hero and Guiding Ally expansion, featuring Battle Phantasm content, Anlucia’s original episodes, new protagonist moves, and Special Trials, launched in Japan for Android and iOS devices on January 15, 2025. This expansion was also released in Japan for Dragon Quest X Online on May 25, 2024, but neither the game nor the expansion has been released in Western markets. While Dragon Quest 12 is the only officially announced title, a project like the Dragon Quest 4 HD Remake seems likely as Square Enix continues to revisit classic titles for current platforms.
