Nintendo Dominates Japan’s Christmas Sales with Switch 2 and Pokemon Legends Leading

Nintendo was the top-selling console brand in Japan during Christmas 2025, with approximately 260,000 units sold between December 15 and 21. The Nintendo Switch 2 was the most popular, accounting for over 221,000 units. The original Nintendo Switch sold more than 38,000 units. The PlayStation 5 sold approximately 19,000 units. Pokémon Legends: ZA was the best-selling game during the Christmas rush, with over 126,000 units sold, bringing its two-month total to 2.4 million physical copies in Japan. Mario Kart World led overall with 2,573,736 physical units sold across one version over six months, including 115,729 additional units. Kirby Air Riders came in third, selling over 49,000 additional units and nearing the 400,000 unit mark.

A study led by Masashi Yanagisawa, a sleep researcher and professor at the University of Tsukuba, found that working adults in Japan lose at least 1 trillion yen (approximately $6.35 billion USD) annually due to disrupted sleep schedules. Analyzing data from around 80,000 Pokémon Sleep users, the researchers found that individuals with social jet lag lost approximately 136,000 yen ($860 USD) more per year compared to those with healthy sleep patterns.
