Microsoft Flight Simulator Expands to PlayStation 5 After Initial Rejection and Sony’s Persistence

Microsoft Flight Simulator’s arrival on PlayStation 5 marks a strategic shift, bringing an Xbox Game Studios title to a traditionally rival platform. According to franchise lead Jorg Neumann, Microsoft Gaming leadership initially rejected the proposal to launch Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 in 2023, but later reversed their decision after discussions with Sony. Neumann noted that after the PC release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, millions of new fans discovered the flight simulator genre on Xbox, many of whom were not PC gamers. As the game’s size grew from 120GB in 2020 to 300GB by 2023, Neumann proposed a smaller installation concept for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and two and half years ago suggested releasing the game on PlayStation. Reportedly, an individual at Sony familiar with the simulator genre believed it would be a good fit for the PlayStation 5 and contacted the president of Microsoft Gaming, who then spoke with Neumann. Sony’s interest in bringing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 to PlayStation, potentially for use with PSVR2, influenced the decision.

PlayStation 5 Version of Microsoft Flight Simulator Integrates PSVR2 Support and DualSense Functionality for 2026 Update

The development team focused on optimizing the game for the PS5 and ensuring seamless controller functionality, including utilizing the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to simulate the feel of flying. PlayStation VR2 support was integrated into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 from the start. While the VR component is still in development, the game is currently running on the PlayStation 5. Microsoft plans to add PSVR 2 support to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 as a free update in 2026.
