In 1980, Warren Robinett’s Adventure for the Atari 2600 introduced the first video game Easter egg and earned critical acclaim from outlets like The Gameplay Channel. Atari now continues to innovate through collaborations with Brazilian studios, beginning with Arvore and Ana Ribeiro’s VR series, Pixel Ripped. Their current project unites them with Ilex Games, led by Marcelo Rigon, president of ACJogosSP. Ilex Games was developing Tower of Samsara Hidden Treasures when Atari offered them the Adventure IP, leading to Adventure of Samsara: a Metroidvania title blending a retro Blasphemous-like aesthetic with Dark Souls-inspired gameplay. As the Solar Champion, players explore a frigid, decaying world, battling shadow-infested areas using swords, shields, and light manipulation. Adding to the game’s charm, the Ilex team infuses the dialogue with humor, including plurality errors, a “Ta Punk” reference, and colloquial Portuguese in the national version.

Adventure of Samsara launched on Steam on September 4, 2025, a date that coincided with the long-awaited release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. For gamers seeking a more accessible experience, Adventure of Samsara offers slower-paced platforming action as the Solar Champion battles to save a dying world. Though inspired by the Atari classic, it’s filled with Easter eggs referencing the original Adventure. In a nod to the original, the dragon who stole the sacred chalice now holds a national distinction within the game—a playful example of blending Brazilian elements with an iconic Atari property. This collaboration was made possible when Atari granted Ilex Games the rights to Adventure. Adventure of Samsara delivers a distinct Brazilian take on the Metroidvania genre, honoring Atari’s classic while forging its own identity.
