PS5 Pro Challenges in Optimizing Path-Traced Global Illumination for Consoles

Gaijin Entertainment, the developer behind War Thunder, has stated that while the PlayStation 5 Pro possesses sufficient power to handle path tracing, maintaining consistent performance could pose a challenge. The studio has already implemented Path-Traced Global Illumination (PTGI) on PC with the Leviathan update, but achieving smooth PTGI performance on consoles presents a greater hurdle. PTGI demands significantly more processing power than conventional ray tracing. Even with the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, effective performance depends on the game engine’s behavior and the GPU’s available resources. Gaijin acknowledged that while creating a PTGI prototype was straightforward, optimizing it proved difficult, requiring extensive fine-tuning for performance, noise reduction, and overall stability. Consequently, the studio is prioritizing the implementation of standard ray tracing on consoles before advancing to PTGI. To enhance ray tracing efficiency, Gaijin is developing new technologies such as Shader Execution Reordering (SER) and Opacity MicroMaps (OMM). These innovations are designed to improve performance, particularly in environments rich with complex objects or dense foliage. The company aims to release these improvements early next year, once the necessary graphics drivers are fully prepared.

Optimizing Path-Traced Global Illumination for Consoles with AMD FSR4 Integration in Enlisted’s Dagor Engine

Additionally, Gaijin confirmed it is preparing support for AMD FSR4, a new upscaling and frame generation system. This will first be rolled out on PC, and Gaijin plans to integrate it into consoles as soon as the technology becomes available. Path-Traced Global Illumination is already undergoing testing in Enlisted, and Gaijin’s Dagor engine will officially support path tracing this year.
