Shawn Layden, former head of PlayStation Studios, believes no company understands its fans as well as Nintendo—a truth he states has been evident across generations and became even more critical following the COVID-19 pandemic. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Layden told HipHopGamer. “I reckon Nintendo’s been deliberate about the lane they play in. I’m not putting them down at all—they’re super focused on who their fans are and what those fans want.” Layden further stated that PlayStation never connected with its fanbase in the same way Nintendo does. He recalled that during the pandemic, when game sales surged as people stayed home, many companies rapidly hired numerous new employees. These companies, Layden explained, believed the trend would be continuous growth, prompting a chase for escalating numbers. Nintendo, however, was the sole company, according to Layden, that anticipated a post-pandemic return to normalcy. This meant people would spend less time at home and on consoles, leading to reduced revenue. Recognizing this shift, Nintendo maintained its existing strategy. As a result, they avoided the volatility others experienced by chasing short-term pandemic-driven opportunities.

Nintendo, he observed, consistently identifies opportunities, perceives them more clearly than others, seizes them, and executes exceptionally well. Layden concluded, “If I were in their shoes, I’d just sit back.”
