Enhanced Shenmue III Returns with Improvements on Multiple Platforms
Yū Suzuki is continuing Ryo Hazuki’s story. Six years after the challenging launch of Shenmue III, Inin Games announced Shenmue III Enhanced at Gamescom 2025. This reworked edition aims to address previous criticisms, attract new fans, and preserve the saga’s unique spirit while delivering a modern gaming experience. Shenmue III Enhanced will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and, for the first time, Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version is also in development. According to the press release, the game has received a significant graphical and technical overhaul, promising refined visuals, more detailed textures, 4K support, DLSS/FSR technologies, shorter load times, smoother gameplay, and a higher density of NPCs. Developers have also implemented several updates to enhance gameplay, first introduced in 2023. These features include optional stamina, auto-healing before fights, an easier economic progression, less strict Quick-Time Events (QTEs), skippable dialogues and cinematics, clearer menus, and simpler navigation. Players can toggle these new features on or off to experience the original 2019 gameplay or opt for a classic camera mode, reminiscent of the Dreamcast era.
Enhanced Shenmue III Redefines Experience Across Multiple Platforms
Beyond technical improvements, this Enhanced Edition represents a second chance for the game. Upon its initial release in 2019, Shenmue III received mixed reviews, with some critics finding it too traditional for mainstream players while others felt it deviated too much from earlier installments. The game garnered a reception that included scores around 10/20. With these new adjustments, the developers hope to rekindle the magic for both existing fans and new players.

Brief Summary | Shenmue III begins March 21, 1987. Ryo Hazuki has made his way to Guilin, China in search of his father's killer, Lan Di. There he meets a new travelling companion, Shenhua Ling, and learns of a legend from her village that has foretold their path together. The story continues as Ryo and Shenhua start off on a new journey that will take them farther into enemy territory, deeper into mystery.
Part I: Bailu Village Ryo and Shenhua discover that a group of thugs have attacked and raided several stonemasons in search of the Phoenix Mirror, leaving their houses a mess. This includes stonemason Guowei Xu. With the help of martial arts expert JiuSi Sun, Ryo defeats the thug leader, Yanlang. Shenhua interrogates Yanlang and learns her father and Xu are in Niaowu. Ryo and Shenhua are also attacked by familiar face Chai, but Ryo thwarts him away. Shenmue III is an action-adventure video game and the sequel to the 2001 game Shenmue II. It follows teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki in his quest to find his father's killer in 1980s China.
