Super Mario Bros. The Movie was a huge win for both Nintendo and Universal Pictures. They’re already hard at work on a sequel for the Illumination-produced animated film. Illumination and Nintendo are developing this new movie, which they believe will be even more engaging and attract more viewers than the original. Illumination’s Chris Meledandri has even hinted at this, stating, “We don’t have an official title yet, but it looks like the name Super Mario World might have accidentally slipped out as the title for Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.” Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad, said the new movie will be much bigger.
Remember that post-credits scene in the first movie? It hinted that a Yoshi egg will be important in the sequel. The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is coming out in April 2026. We’ll probably get more official news and maybe even the first trailer before 2025 ends. Shigeru Miyamoto, who oversees Nintendo’s film projects, has stated, “We’ve got a pretty good idea of how this new film will turn out to be super interesting.” The first Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed a whopping $1.36 billion at the box office. Audiences absolutely loved it, instantly clamoring for more films based on Nintendo’s games. So, it’s no surprise that the companies involved are treating this sequel with the utmost care. Nintendo recently told investors that the movie’s primary goal is to delight Super Mario fans, but they also think it can attract new audiences unfamiliar with Nintendo or the Mario world yet.
