On Thursday (26th), SEGA announced that Sonic is returning to F1 tracks, partnering with McLaren Racing. They are teaming up to merge racing and gaming worlds, engaging everyone of all ages on screens and tracks. This is part of the “Racing Around the World” campaign, featuring SEGA characters and racing events. It leads up to Sonic Racing Cross Worlds launch on Sept 25th. The partnership runs until 2026, celebrating SEGA’s 35 years and McLaren their 1000th F1 race. Interestingly, this isn’t their first collaboration – they teamed up back in 1993. Then, SEGA sponsored the European Grand Prix, held at England’s Donington Park circuit. There were two trophies: a regular F1 trophy and one shaped like Sonic for the winner, who was none other than McLaren driver Ayrton Senna. That race saw an iconic image for ’90s Brazilian gamers – Senna holding a Sonic trophy. It was iconic because Senna was our national hero then, with 3 Formula 1 titles. Meanwhile, Sonic was one of the faves in Brazil, thanks to Tec Toy popularizing the Mega Drive and Master System.
