Since Benoît Sokal’s departure, his work has not been more prominently featured. Following the demanding development of “L’Amerzone Le Testament de l’Explorateur,” the remaster of the original Syberia is now in progress, a true cornerstone of the adventure game genre in the 2000s. This project includes a complete visual update, compatibility with modern platforms, and even a virtual reality version. Developed through close collaboration between Virtuallyz Gaming and Microids Studio Paris (which appears to still be active), this restored edition aims to reintroduce players to Kate Walker’s adventure—the New York lawyer unexpectedly thrust into an odd journey across a melancholic, industrial, and dreamlike Europe. The teams assure a thorough modernization while maintaining the poetic and narrative essence of the original work. Graphics, characters, and animations will receive a full revamp, utilizing current console capabilities to enhance the game’s iconic environments.
Syberia is much more than just a game; it is an initiatory journey, providing a sensory and emotional experience that is unforgettable. With this remaster, our goal is to reintroduce this adventure to a new generation while offering existing fans an improved version that honors Benoît Sokal’s legacy,” emphasizes Elliot Grassiano, founder of Microids.
The announcement of Syberia Remastered aligns with a broader initiative to revive the legacy of Benoît Sokal, who passed away in 2021. Following the successful remake of L’Amerzone – Le Testament de l’Explorateur, which received critical acclaim, Microids continues its efforts to preserve and transmit Sokal’s universe. In conjunction with this remastered version, Microids also reveals plans for an exclusive virtual reality adaptation for the Meta Quest 3. Designed as a standalone experience from the outset, this VR rendition will provide unparalleled sensory immersion by allowing players to explore the game’s iconic environments in first-person perspective. The first visuals and details are anticipated to be unveiled in the coming months.
Syberia Remastered is currently under development with a scheduled release at the end of 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
