In a sudden and unannounced move, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed the release date for Ghost of Tsushima, which is set to arrive on PS5 in October. This marks PlayStation’s other major game for 2025 following Death Stranding 2, scheduled to be released earlier that year in June. It was expected that Sony would choose a more appropriate occasion, such as a State of Play event, to make this announcement; however, a post on the PlayStation Blog and a new trailer were sufficient to inform players that pre-orders will open from May 2 onwards. Some speculate that Sony Interactive Entertainment learned of GTA 6’s release date before announcing Ghost of Tsushima’s, but it appears more likely that the timing was aimed at carving out space amid the anticipated shadow cast by Rockstar Games’ title, as business strategies need to proceed.
The video accompanying this announcement offers further details about the story of “Ghost of Yotei,” which will chronicle Atsu’s vengeful journey at the beginning of the 17th century, approximately 300 years after Jin Sakai’s era. This development may disappoint those who were hoping to revisit the hero from the first episode, whom players have come to admire. Instead, the narrative will focus on Atsu as he seeks retribution against a group of assassins responsible for the murder of his entire family and village. The storyline bears similarities to that of “Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood”…
Sixteen years ago, in what is now known as Hokkaido (formerly Ezo), Atsu suffered immense loss at the hands of an outlaw gang called the Six of Yotei. They killed her family and left her for dead, impaled on a burning ginkgo tree near her home. However, Atsu survived. She learned to fight, kill, and hunt, and after all these years, she returns home with a list of six names: the Serpent, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, the Dragon, and Lord Saito.
One by one, she intends to hunt them down to exact revenge for her family, wielding the same katana that once pinned her to a burning tree. However, although Atsu’s story begins with vengeance, she gradually comes to realize that her journey encompasses much more than simple retaliation. As she explores Ezo, Atsu meets unexpected allies and forms relationships that help her discover new purpose in life.
Sony announced various editions of the game, including a collector’s version priced at 249€. This edition includes all pre-order bonuses, all in-game items from the Digital Deluxe Edition, a digital copy of the game, and a replica of Atsu’s Phantom mask. The mask is scaled similarly to Jin Sakai’s mask found in Ghost of Tsushima’s Collector’s Edition, measuring 17.2 x 12.7 x 15 cm, made of resin, and comes with its display stand. Additionally, the edition includes a replica of Atsu’s belt, featuring the names of the Six of Yōtei (which you’ll need to scratch off yourself). The belt measures 180 cm and is made of blended cotton, suitable for cosplay or decoration.
There will also be a replica of the tsuba on Atsu’s katana, forged by his father and depicting two mirror-image wolves. This tsuba measures approximately 7.6 x 7.6 cm and comes with its display stand. In addition to all the above elements, the Collector’s Edition of Ghost of Yōtei offers a bag of coins and instructions for playing zeni-hajiki, an aim game featured in the game. You will also receive a foldable papercraft ginkgo with a wolf at its base, as well as a set of four illustrated cards measuring 12.7 x 17.7 cm representing the belt, the wolf, Atsu’s ghost mask, and the main illustration.
