If Ubisoft claims 3 million players worldwide today, the industry continues to await the actual sales figures. For now, the French publisher opts to discuss player numbers and hours played, which sustains criticism. Nonetheless, we can refer to Famitsu for sales data in Japan, where the first physical sales figures for Ubisoft’s game have been released, indicating that the performance is far from positive; it is even considered a flop.
With only 17,701 copies sold in a box on PS5 during its first week, Assassin’s Creed Shadows cannot obviously compete with other releases of the week, such as notably the Xenoblade Chronicles remaster. Worse, Shadows’ sales are lower than those of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, considered a minor episode in the saga, which had recorded 20,407 sales on PS5 and 8,029 on PS4. However, it should be noted that Japan has never been a strong market for Assassin’s Creed, as episodes Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla have consistently sold around 50,000 copies in their first week… Nonetheless, the performance of Shadows indicates that Japanese players have not shown significant interest, reflecting a challenging reception.
