The popularity of Assassin’s Creed Shadows remains strong, with Ubisoft announcing on their social media platforms one week after the game’s release that it has reached three million players. Additionally, in their latest update, Ubisoft disclosed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows became the second-best selling game in the franchise’s history on its release day, trailing behind only Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It is also worth noting that AC Shadows marks the best launch for any Ubisoft game on the PlayStation Store, and the community has already logged over 40 million hours exploring the game’s stunning open world.
If one can celebrate the success of this game despite the numerous obstacles it has faced, there remains a significant uncertainty: the actual number of sales. Why is Ubisoft disclosing the number of players instead of providing the customary sales figures? Some speculate that this could be a strategy to understate performance and avoid showing that the game is not meeting expectations sufficiently. According to certain resellers who discussed this on Twitter, between 100,000 and 120,000 copies of the game were sold in France alone during its first week, exclusively in physical format, which represents a substantial achievement. For context, these sales figures are three times those of Avatar Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws but match the total number of Astro Bot sales in France since its release last September.
According to our information, approximately 507,000 copies of Assassin’s Creed Shadows were sold on Steam. Given that the console-to-PC ratio is 73% for consoles and 27% for PC, we observe that China had the highest sales with a 26.4% market share, followed by the United States with 20.4%, then Russia at 6.4%. In contrast, Japan showed little interest in Ubisoft’s game, selling only 17,700 copies in a week.
