Among the games showcased during Xbox’s Developer_Direct event was Clair Obscur Expedition 33. Since its reveal in June 2024, the game has been generating interest among amateur RPG players, particularly those who enjoy J-RPGs. Developed by Sandfall Interactive, a French team, the title is scheduled for release on April 24th, alongside Fatal Fury City of the Wolves, although these games cater to different genres. Now, it’s time to explore its universe and gameplay in more detail. The game features a turn-based combat system that many players appreciate, though some may find it daunting. For Sandfall Interactive, it was essential to create a gameplay experience with genuine strategic depth. In addition to the turn-based elements, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 includes real-time mechanics. To ensure accessibility, developers offer multiple difficulty settings. They point to Sekiro’s timing as an example that might not appeal to everyone, and therefore, depending on the selected level, windows for parrying or dodging will be more accommodating.
Regarding the graphics and artistic direction of Clair Obscur Expedition 33, it is noted that the game draws inspiration from French Belle Époque Art Déco and classic JRPGs. To achieve this aesthetic, Sandfall Interactive hired Nicholas Maxson-Francombe to depart from typical video game conventions. He explains that his work was influenced by ceramic textures, which impacted both environment design and enemy creation. Additionally, the game utilizes Unreal Engine 5, contributing significantly to its high-quality visual rendering. The release of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is highly anticipated for April 24th next year, with plans to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
