The official sales figures for Dynasty Warriors Origins have not been released yet; however, it seems the game is having a strong launch. According to SteamDB data, there was a peak of 69,318 concurrent players over the weekend of its release. As of the time of writing, 53,556 concurrent players are playing the game, marking the largest success for a KOEI Tecmo title in its history. This makes it the second-largest release from the Japanese publisher on Steam in terms of simultaneous players, following Wu Long Fallen Dynasty (75,900 players connected at once), Nioh 2 (41,300), Wild Hearts (28,500), Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake (18,900), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV (16,400).
Producer Tomohiko Sho and his teams must currently be pleased, as they faced significant pressure to revitalize a nearly 30-year-old franchise that had deviated from its original path in recent years, with Dynasty Warriors 9 being somewhat off-target according to PlayersForLife’s rating of 8/10. However, by rebooting the franchise, addressing previous shortcomings, returning to foundational elements, and incorporating inspiration from Souls-like gameplay without direct imitation, Dynasty Warriors has succeeded in engaging both critics and players alike. The game boasts an 80% score on Metacritic based on 53 reviews, while players rate it 8/10.
The game has received a perfectly aligned favorable opinion, which can be described as “Very positive” (94%) on Steam based on over 5,000 reviews. According to Steam Scout, which analyzes both direct purchases via Steam and key activations, 57.12% of all reviews are written in simplified Chinese. This is not surprising given the popularity of the Three Kingdoms narrative in China (and Musou games in general). The other languages that have posted and commented the most on Steam are then English (21.9%), traditional Chinese (10%), Korean (4.65%), and Japanese (3.05%). It should also be noted that Dynasty Warriors is historically a console franchise, indicating that its current success must be even greater. In its global scope, the Dynasty Warriors license has sold over 21 million copies worldwide.
