Among the many video game adaptations set for release in cinemas, the upcoming adaptation of Until Dawn is scheduled for April 25, 2025. Sony Pictures has recently released an initial video featuring first look images and insights from the film’s screenwriter, Gary Dauberman, and its director, David F. Sandberg, known for directing “Annabelle 2,” as well as the films “Shazam!” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Returning to his roots in horror and gore, Sandberg aims to reinvent the basic concept from Supermassive Games’ original game. Instead of adhering to the video game’s storyline, which is familiar and predictable due to its known outcome, the adaptation introduces a time loop element. The characters, trapped in an ominous setting, face relentless attacks from a serial killer; however, each time they perish, they are immediately revived and must endure the same events anew while striving to survive until dawn. A unique twist emerges with each “respawn,” transforming into a fresh horror film experience.
A subtle and clever approach to diverge from the original concept in order to better surprise the viewer, while maintaining the core essence of video game play, which involves making choices and facing their consequences. In David F. Sandberg’s film adaptation, the cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A’zion, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and actor Peter Stormare, who previously portrayed the psychoanalyst in the video game. The release of the film “Until Dawn” is scheduled for April 23, 2025, in cinemas.
