It would be inaccurate to claim that people were unaware Capcom was developing a new installment of Onimusha, given that the game leaked four years ago under the title “Onimusha New Work” in the company’s Japanese Excel files. What was less expected, however, was its appearance at the Game Awards 2024 evening. The surprise was complete and the reception impressive, as this new installment draws inspiration from contemporary action games while incorporating elements of Nioh and popular Souls-like titles. It is important to note that Onimusha has offered a dark fantasy Japanese atmosphere for nearly three decades now, and this entry will remain true to that style. Capcom emphasizes that the Onimusha series is set during Japan’s Sengoku period, an era marked by internal conflict among competing states. The games weave historical events with Japanese folklore to narrate the stories of warriors who wield the mystical power of Oni.
According to information available, Onimusha Way of the Sword will be set in Kyoto’s districts during the early Edo period. However, the city has become overrun by demonic Genma, and it is up to a lone samurai equipped with the Oni gauntlet to combat these otherworldly beings. The game is scheduled for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series in 2026.
