For several months, rumors have circulated about the Xbox Portable, and today these have been confirmed by Phil Spencer during an interview with Bloomberg. However, it is important to note that this does not signal an imminent release; according to the head of the Xbox division, the project is still in its early stages and will require several years before becoming a reality. Currently, Microsoft is in an observation phase to assess market behavior, taking into consideration significant developments such as the 2025 launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the introduction of devices like the Asus ROG Ally. This initiative represents a future-oriented investment for Microsoft at a time when console sales are declining, while the company’s focus is increasingly on Game Pass availability across all market devices, including competitors’ offerings. The strategy also aims to diversify Microsoft’s hardware portfolio by transforming the Xbox brand and positioning in-game streaming as one of its primary focuses.
In the meantime, efforts are focused on enhancing the Xbox app for mobile devices. Phil Spencer described it as “good but not excellent” and underscored the urgency of introducing genuine innovations for such products. This comes alongside Microsoft’s delayed online store for mobile games, also due to the company’s need to understand player needs and consumption behavior. At least, this announcement puts an end to speculation about the Xbox Portable.
