There is still no exact release date for Metal Slug Tactics, but DotEmu has provided updates on their upcoming game expected this fall. In a video featuring Leikir Studio developers, they demonstrate their enthusiasm for SNK’s license and discuss the challenges of reviving previous pixel art while aiming to capture the series’ essence. The trailer highlights new elements that deviate from the series’ conventions, including a tactical dimension, randomization to enhance replayability, unlockable skills, and roguelite-oriented progression. This approach introduces fresh mechanics such as synchronized attacks rewarding smart troop placement and a barracks-style base where units for combat are selected. It remains uncertain whether purist Metal Slug fans will be satisfied with the shift from run & gun gameplay to Tactical-RPG, but DotEmu deserves recognition for their innovative effort. Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that another Metal Slug game is in development at SNK, marking yet another franchise revival.
