Thirteen years is how long it took for Alan Wake to finally receive a genuine sequel, and its release was not guaranteed. The first Alan Wake was released in 2010 exclusively on Xbox 360 but did not achieve the commercial success it deserved despite its many merits. While the general public may have overlooked it, Remedy Entertainment never abandoned hope of continuing the story of this tormented writer. Between each new project (Quantum Break, Control), developers proposed ideas to revive the franchise. Although the 2021 remaster also faced commercial failure, work on a sequel continued undeterred. By the end of 2023, we return to Bright Falls, delving once more into the twisted mind of Alan Wake. However, many things have changed this time around.
We had already suspected it, but with Alan Wake 2, the developers at Remedy Entertainment have fine-tuned some settings, and we can now confidently say that this sequel is not just a simple survival horror; it’s also a memorable experience, sometimes traumatic. Sam Lake wanted to make Alan Wake 2 a memorable game, and indeed, there are many sequences that will be etched in our memory; starting with this unexpected and somewhat shocking intro scene. This is one of the strengths of Alan Wake 2, namely its oppressive atmosphere, its heavy ambiance where each jump scare will thoroughly unnerve us on our couch.
Next-Gen Graphics
This palpable visual tension is primarily conveyed through the graphics, one of the most surprising aspects of the game. We already knew that Remedy’s Northlight engine was capable of much, but with Alan Wake 2, developers prove they masterfully wield their tool. Whether it is character modeling, all elements comprising environments, textures, lighting, animations, or even facial expressions, everything is stunningly beautiful and realistic. A simple exploration of the various levels reveals the meticulous attention to detail, so well-executed that American Pacific Northwest towns are faithfully recreated. It’s quite disorienting. We did not necessarily expect Alan Wake 2 to reach this level of mastery, but we can confidently say it is one of the most beautiful games of 2023 and perhaps the most seductive since The Last of Us Part 2. Some might argue that we finally have a next-gen game, and they would not be entirely wrong.
If Alan Wake 2 aims to be more of a survival horror experience in its atmosphere, this is also reflected in its gameplay. The structure from the first episode, which allowed players to be dropped into open zones and face waves of tens of enemies simultaneously, has been discarded. Here, encounters focus on 1 or 2 enemies at a time, occasionally 3, but no more, as each confrontation is meant to be intense. Players will need multiple shots to defeat each possessed enemy, and they must first weaken them using a light mechanic linked to the flashlight. By pressing R1, both Saga Anderson and Alan Wake can concentrate their light beam to weaken an enemy, only then allowing players to empty their clip to eliminate them. This also implies limited ammunition, requiring careful use of each bullet to avoid running out quickly. Fortunately, players can inflict close-quarters attacks to weaken enemies and evade assaults, similar to the original Alan Wake. With these mechanics in place, encounters become more flexible, proving that a Resident Evil 4 remake could have benefited from an updated gameplay to shed its notoriously rigid nature…
Survival Horror for Survival
However, if the combat encounters in Alan Wake 2 are more challenging than in the original game (due to increased enemy ferocity), it becomes apparent that these confrontations occur less frequently. This may disappoint those expecting a similar level of gunfight intensity found in games like Resident Evil 4 and its remake. While shooting sequences do exist, they are not as prevalent as in Capcom’s survival horror titles. Instead, the game emphasizes progressing an investigation; players should be aware of this focus. The gameplay requires a degree of thoughtfulness and concentration to understand how these violent rituals emerged in the region. Players must meticulously examine their surroundings for clues, ranging from simple letters to boxes that need opening or audio notes scattered throughout environments. Those who dislike exploring detailed environments might miss out on critical elements necessary for progressing through the game, such as this hidden shotgun tucked away in a room that could easily be overlooked.
To reinforce the experience of participating in a criminal investigation, Alan Wake 2 will feature player profiling mechanisms. When playing as Saga Anderson, players can access the Mental Nest by pressing the controller’s touchpad at any time during gameplay. In this space, which resembles an office, Saga Anderson can analyze gathered evidence, develop suspect profiles, advance the investigation using a board, listen to audio recordings, review videos, and improve weapons. Despite its seemingly tranquil appearance, the game frequently reminds players that entering the Mental Nest does not pause the main action, leaving Saga Anderson vulnerable during these interactions. Similarly, Alan Wake, when in his writer’s room—a space where he was confined for 13 years—can use a typewriter, view objectives, and consult maps to navigate levels and understand his goals.
