After building up anticipation for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 over several weeks, Activision and Sledgehammer Games took things to the next level by aiming to wow players at every turn. During the nighttime gamescom conference, they revealed a stunning 9-minute sequence from the solo campaign, giving viewers an incredible glimpse into the game’s breathtaking graphics engine and the incredibly dark atmosphere of this episode. This sneak peek showcased the opening mission, titled “Operation 627,” where the elite PMC Alpha Team squad is introduced. Viewers were treated to seeing some of its members entering a majestic stone fortress—none other than Verdansk itself!
On October 13, 2023, at 02:00 local time, Team Alpha put their amphibious skills to the test and successfully infiltrated the Zordaya penitentiary complex. Dressed in aquatic suits and equipped with oxygen reservoirs and diver propulsion vehicles, they glided through the water until reaching the base of the fortress. Once there, they climbed up the steep rampart slope and followed the mission’s precise plans. Using silent weapons, night vision goggles (NVG), and stealth tactics, Team Alpha moved along a narrow wall passage until spotting a breach in its western section.Joining forces with paratrooper reinforcements, the team took strategic positions at both the base of the ramparts and courtyard level. Their keen eyes confirmed the presence of a high-value target (HVT) entering a prisoner transfer helicopter—initially mistaken for their true objective. However, Team Alpha quickly realized that their target was deeper within the complex. With this knowledge, they sprang into action by initiating a clever diversion with an explosive outside the facility to launch their first strike from behind against enemy forces.
Quickly shedding its stealthy cover, Team Alpha deploys smoke screens to conceal themselves before spotting a hatch in the courtyard. With precision and agility, they use this entry point to dive deeper into the complex through an intricate network of tunnels. Lucky for them, they emerge right next to the heart of the panopticon—essentially the core prison area of the gulag, complete with a central security observation tower. The team prepares mentally as their radio crackles to life just moments before they plunge into the pitch-black darkness. Guided only by mouth flashes, lasers, and night vision goggles, Team Alpha rappels down with surgical precision, setting off chaos by taking out several prison guards who are frantically trying to restore order.
The cell doors unlock with a resounding clank, and inmates pour into the winding corridors, eager for revenge. Alarms wail as chaos erupts around them. Despite the pandemonium, Team Alpha pushes through the crowd and reaches the lowest level of the prison. To their surprise, imprisoned individuals cheer and bang on their cell bars in support. With this unexpected boost, Team Alpha takes out a few more guards and heads to the sub-level for their final objective: “to apprehend our man.” They breach an interior sealed door with a well-placed explosive…
In addition to the thrilling “Operation 627,” Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’s campaign offers a refreshing change with more open and exploratory sections compared to the typical corridor-filled, cinematic style we’ve come to know from past installments in the series. Fans can look forward to even more exciting details about the multiplayer mode soon. And get this—those eager for single-player action will have a special treat: the campaign will be available a full week before the game’s official release on November 10th!
